Living with Bipolar Disorder

disorder No Comments »

Bipolar Disorder is a chronic and complex mental health disorder that causes extreme mood swings, including periods of extreme lows (depression) and extreme highs (mania or hypomania). In this video, we will discuss what Bipolar Disorder is, the symptoms of manic, hypomanic, and depressive episodes, and comparing the difference between Bipolar Disorder Type 1 and Type 2. Also, we will discuss the biological aspect of Bipolar Disorder by introducing two key hormones – Serotonin and Dopamine. We want to raise the public awareness of mental health issues, and emphasize the importance of seeking a health care professional if you or anyone you know is suffering from a mental health crisis.

This video was made by McMaster Demystifying Medicine students Mark Bertone, Jasmine Leung, Teja Koi and Maha Arif.

5 Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms You Shouldn’t Ignore

coping No Comments »

We all have different ways of dealing with stressful circumstances. Coping mechanisms are go-to strategies you consciously or unconsciously implement to self-soothe in the face of stress and or trauma that help your emotional well-being. The caveat is that not all coping skills are healthy. What can seem like a temporary fix or something you only do in certain situations can be unhealthy coping mechanisms. To help you improve your mental health, this video addresses unhealthy coping skills, which we are all more likely to do.

If you relate to this video and want to learn how to practice self-love, we have a video on that too: https://youtu.be/ZsTKyYOuK84

Aneysha Bhat is a Bioengineering student and co-innovator of TenseSense. She and her team of 4 bioengineers are developing a way to raise awareness about mental health and advance personalized medicine.

You can rewire your brain to be less anxious through a simple, but not easy, process. Understanding the anxiety cycle and how avoidance causes anxiety to spiral out of control unlocks the key to learning how to tone down anxiety and rewire those neural pathways to feel safe and secure.
In this video, I teach three essential things you need to understand about anxiety, three steps to face and overcome anxiety, and how the brain can actually change (rewire) its structure, function, and chemistry when you change how you think and act.

About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.

In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, Positive Psychology, and a Bio-Psycho-Social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR) and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life’s direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview, sense of security, peace, hope, and love. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist/believe

Joy Division – Disorder

disorder No Comments »

Artist: Joy Division
Song: Disorder
Album: Unknown Pleasures

Lyrics

I’ve been waiting for a guide to come
and take me by the hand
Could these sensations make me feel
the pleasures of a normal man
New sensations bear the innocence –
leave them for another day
I’ve go the spirit, lose the feeling
take the shock away

It’s getting faster, moving faster now,
it’s getting out of hand
On the tenth floor, down the backstairs
into no-man’s land
Lights are flashing,
cars are crashing,
getting frequent now
I’ve got the spirit, lose the feeling, let it
out somehow

What means to you,
what means to me –
and we will meet again
I’m watching you, I watch it all
I take no pity from friends
Who is right and who can tell,
and who gives a damn right now
Until the spirit, new sensation
takes hold – then you know (3)
I’ve got the spirit, but lose the feeling (2)

Rosie Darling – Coping 🎤

[Verse 1]
I’m not used to being with somebody with their shit together
Saying sorry actually makes it better
I did things to you I said I’d never
I miss waiting for you in the lobby of your old apartment
Drawing shapes with you into the carpet
Back before the end had even started

[Pre-Chorus]
Now that you’re gone
It’s my fault
I’m so lost
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry

[Chorus]
Smoking cheap pre-rolls and listening to LANY
Hoping you don’t hate me
I know it’s lame, but this is how I’m coping without
Inside jokes and places that you’d take me
Bet you probably blame me
I know it’s lame, but this is how I’m coping without you

[Verse 2]
I’m the best at getting disappointed by my expectations
Try to read my mind, it’s always racing
Damn, I really love to test your patience

[Pre-Chorus]
Now that you’re gone
It’s my fault
I’m so lost
I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry

[Chorus]
Smoking cheap pre-rolls and listening to LANY
Hoping you don’t hate me
I know it’s lame, but this is how I’m coping without
Inside jokes and places that you’d take me
Bet you probably blame me
I know it’s lame, but this is how I’m coping without you
Without you
Without you
Without you (Without you)

[Bridge]
I’m the best at getting disappointed by my expectations
Try to read my mind, it’s always racing
Damn, I really love to test your patience

[Chorus]
Smoking cheap pre-rolls and listening to LANY
Hoping you don’t hate me
